Is Photoshop an absolute requirment?

  If you can make .psd files, you're good to go.
  
  I make them with Paint tool SAI and it's alright.

  It's not mandatory really, you can arrange your model body parts in Illustrator and save them to PNG format, and then you import it as a texture in Cubism Editor and manually place them.
  
  PSD format has benefit of PSD import feature in Cubism Editor, which you don't have to manually place body parts.

  I save my Sketchbook Pro drawings as PSD, but they won't load in modeler. Only actual Photoshop saves seem to open.
